General Bernard Montgomery

General Bernard Montgomery

On Board HMS Duke of York a British Battleship WW11
At the out break of World War II Montgomery had risen to the rank of General’s and was in command of the British 3rd Division which he took to France in 1938, only to be evacuated again from Dunkirk battered but in one peace in 1940.
He was then given command of V and then VII Corps and sent by Churchill to the Western Desert to take command of the 8th Army replacing Auchinleck. The 8th Army had just been reequipped with modern equipment when the German commander Rommel overstretched himself with the speed of his advance, Montgomery was then able to turn and chase the Germans towards Tunis.
Montgomery became the first British general to defeat a major German commander in open battle.
In January 1944, he was recalled to Britain to help plan the invasion of Europe were he insisted on amplifying the landing force from three divisions to five. on the 6th June, he conducted a well judged offensive against the Germans, in September he gave up command of the land force’s to Eisenhower but continued in charge of the 21st Army Group until the end of the War.
His last major achievement of the war was the organization of the Rhine Crossing. He was made Viscount Montgomery of Alamein for his great victory of 1942.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto,

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto,

Isoroku Yamamoto was born in 1884. His original family name, Takano, was changed through adoption. Graduated from the Japanese Naval Academy in 1904, he was wounded in action during the Russo-Japanese War. Yamamoto attended the Naval War College during the "teens" and later studied at Harvard University. As a Captain, he served as Naval Attache to the United States in 1925-28. In the late 1920s and during the 1930s, he held a number of important positions, many of them involved with Japanese naval aviation.

Admiral Yamamoto commanded the Combined Fleet before the outbreak of the Pacific War and during its first sixteen months. He was responsible for planning the Attack on Pearl Harbor and most other major operations during this time. His scheme for eliminating the U.S. fleet as a major opponent led to the June 1942 Battle of Midway, in which the Japan lost naval superiority in the Pacific.

Despite Midway's adverse outcome, Yamamoto continued as Combined Fleet commander through the following Guadalcanal Campaign, which further depleted Japan's naval resources. While on an inspection tour in the Northern Solomon Islands, he was killed in an aerial ambush by U.S. Army Air Force planes on 18 April 1943. Isoroku Yamamoto was posthumously promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet.
