Chinese Construction Company Blatantly
Disregards Worker Safety
In an attempt to increase tourist traffic, a Chinese construction company is building a road on the side of a mountain, thousands of feet up. While no accidents have been reported as of yet, workers are denied the safety of harnesses as they walk their way up and down rickety, rusted walkway. As construction progresses, workers are required to build more scaffolding by anchoring shaky steel bars into the mountain, again without safety harnesses. Workers pour concrete bases that will support glass-sided walkways on sheer cliffs that would challenge the climbing skills of even the most experienced mountaineers. While construction has progressed steadily since 2011, conditions for the workers have not improved, nor does the company seem to be taking any steps to ensure the safety of individual workers. Nonetheless, workers have become accustomed to the conditions, saying that after a while they forget about the height and that if workers function as a team, “It’s not as dangerous as people think.” Even so, we feel that the company in charge of construction should reach out to workers and give them the option of protective gear instead of forcing them to work in an environment where one false step could result in disaster.
