fair in Blackpool, England.
It's a Long Way A British soldier of the 3rd
(Prince of Wale's) Dragoon Guards, kisses his daughter before leaving for France
at the very beginning of World War 1. The smiles belie the future horror of the
War.
Derby Defence A Royal Defence Force sentry
at a Government building, during the Strike Crisis of 1921. It was a time of
national industrial tension, as the posters behind him
indicate.
Friendly Skies The German airship Graf
Zeppelin flying over St Paul's Cathedral, London. The Graf Zeppelin was on a
twenty-four hour cruise around the British Isles. August 1931.
Swing Time A jitterbug competition in
progress, London December 1939. Competitions took place all over the country
with young people enjoying the dance craze of the era, a fun distraction from
the run up to World War II.
Leaving Home London schoolboys, complete
with gas masks in cardboard boxes and luggage, all set for evacuation to the
country, September 1939. At the beginning of the war children from the major
cities were sent to rural corners of the country, in the hope they'd be safe
from German bombs, leaving their distraught mothers for the first
time.
Everything Stops for Tea A fireman enjoys a
refreshing cup of tea as he works to clear rubble caused by the bombing of
London by the German Luftwaffe. Sept 1940.
Head of State A portrait of Queen Elizabeth

A New Home 1955 saw the arrival of the
largest number of Jamaicans to the UK thus far. Encouraged by the promises of
jobs and housing, thousands of the Uk's Commonwealth dependents flocked to the
mother country undergoing a massive labor shortage following the War. This group
have arrived in Plymouth, southern England on a boat from the
Caribbean.
Street Fighting Men The Rolling Stones in
1969. The bad boys of pop held a photocall to present their new member, Mick
Taylor (white jacket) who replaced guitarist Brian Jones who had died earlier
that year.
Dirty Old Town A long way from the glamour
of Swinging London, in 1974 there were still slum areas in the north of England.
Here a man pushes a cart through the streets of a poor area of
Manchester.
The Iron Lady 1979 saw the election of
Britain's first Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. She would go on to rule the
country for 11 years. Here she arrives at Conservative Party HQ on election
day.
London's Burning A police car blazes in
Brixton, South London, 1981. Brixton, a poor area of London erupted in violence
that summer as riots ran for several days and nights; the result of poverty and
racial tension between black youths and the police.
Young Love Diana, Princess of Wales, holds
the young Prince William for the cameras, December 1982. A proud father sits
behind. William was born in the previous July.
