After Japan’s Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II, Washington joined forces with China’s Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-Shek to drive Japan’s invading forces out of China. This 1942 photo, taken in Burma, shows U.S. Gen. Joseph Stilwell with Chiang and Madame Chiang, aka Soong May-ling. At this meeting, Chiang informed his military staff that Stilwell would lead them against the Japanese forces. The Nationalist and rival Communist forces cooperated in fighting the Japanese invaders, but ultimately turned against one another to battle for control of China.   일본 항복 후 미국은 한 때 스틸웰을 점령군 사령관으로 한국에 보낼 계획을 세웠으나 장개석의 반대로 없던 일로 했다. 하지 대신 그가 왔다면 한반도 역사가 바뀌었을까?
