A Photographer's Last
Assignment
Fallen Photojournalist Life magazine photographer Paul Schutzer,
photographed here with Israeli female soldiers, was killed 40 years ago this
week, on June 5, 1967, the first day of the Six-Day War.
Militarization Tension between Israel and
its Arab neighbors built gradually in the early 60s.
War In June of 1967, Egypt massed 100,000
troops on the Sinai Peninsula. on June 5, Israel launched a pre-emptive air
strike. Schutzer documented Israeli soldiers firing mortar rounds at Egyptian
positions.
Fateful Ride As Israeli troops advanced
through the Peninsula, Schutzer embedded with a column of tanks and
half-tracks.
Road to Battle The column made its way
across the Egyptian border.
Frame 11 Schutzer focused on one tank.
Frame 14 The tank rolls into the Gaza Strip,
which was then a part of Egypt.
Frame 22 This was the last photo Schutzer
took: two half-tracks trailing his vehicle.
A Life Cut Short Schutzer was 37 when he
