BEST: Sandra Bullock, 49
Does the Gravity star ever make a mistake? A year before her 50th birthday, Bullock hit the red carpet in a midnight blue gown by Alexander McQueen that was right out of classic 1940’s Hollywood.

WORST: Liza Minnelli, 67
The following words should not be used together: electric blue, satin, off-the-shoulder, pants suit, braless. But leave it to Liza to break all the rules. Oh, and she had a matching blue streak in her hair

BEST: Cate Blanchett, 44
It wasn’t just that this embellished nude sheath by Giorgio Armani was gorgeous, it was that it fit Blanchett so beautifully that the glittering blossoms seemed to cling to her of their own free will

WORST: Glenn Close, 66

BEST: Portia de Rossi, 41

WORST: Kim Novak, 81

BEST: Viola Davis, 48

WORST: Julia Roberts, 46
The dress was lovely from the waist up, but then the black lace in a frenzy of pleats. You’d send anyone else home to change, but this Givenchy Haute Couture Roberts’ usual effervescence mitigated the disappointing gown

BEST: Naomi Watts, 45
Watt’s super simple white cap-sleeve Calvin Klein Collection sheath was stunning she set it off with a distinctive spider-web necklace by Bulgari.

WORST: Julie Delpy, 44
The ethereal French actress and star of Before Midnight looked like she might float away in all the beige sparkly pleats in this gown by Jenny Packham. It almost worked

BEST: Meryl Streep, 64
Streep favors draped gowns and she didn’t deviate this year with this white on top, black on bottom simple look. Mostly it worked — because she wore it with aplomb
