The Moment the Challenger Broke
On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger — the tenth flight and orbiter mission STS-51-L of NASA, broke apart just after 70 seconds into its launch. There were seven crew members onboard, including teacher and payload specialist Christa McAuliffe, all of whom were killed.
An estimated 17 percent of Americans watched the launch live. This photo shows the heartbreaking scene and reaction of witnesses on the ground as they watched the shuttle break apart.
The Beautiful Suicide
On May 1, 1947, Evelyn Francis McHale, an American bookkeeper, jumped to her death off the Empire State Building. She jumped from the 86th-floor Observation Deck.
This photo was taken by Robert Wiles, a photography student, only minutes after the suicide. Famous artist Andy Warhol helped popularize the image by using it for inspiration for his Suicide (Fallen Body) print.
Anne Frank and Sister on Beach
Most people are familiar with the story of Anne Frank, thanks to her diary in which she famously recorded her experience from 1942 to 1944 while hiding from the Germans during World War II.
What is much rarer, though, is seeing Anne during earlier, better years — like in this photo. The portrait, taken in August 1940, features Anne and her sister, Margot, on the beach.
