Saint Petersburg is visited and photographed by millions of people every year. However, the American photographer Amos Chapple chose a specific method of shooting: he used a little drone to lift his camera high over the streets, channels and cathedrals of St. Petersburg. Peter and Paul fortress and the frozen Neva river at the background.  The fortress is situated on Hare’s island being the historic core of the Northern Palmyra. When the fortress was being built, only shabby huts of fishermen were standing on small islands of the Neva. Church of the Savior on Blood was constructed to epitomize the murdered tsar, it wa intended to become a place of public worship. The fragment of the paved street on which the tsar was lying is kept in the old temple which serves as a museum now.  (Amos Chapple / Rex Features)

Saint Isaac’s Cathedral that is partially being reconstructed. It was being erected for long 40 years (1818-1858). Many Finnish workers helped to build the object which resulted in the idiom to appear in the Finnish language: “to build the St. Isaac’s way”, i.e. “to build too long or longer than expected”.
